George Francis Chaves, 85, of Little Compton, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 15, 2015, at Hathaway Manor Extended Care Facility in New Bedford. Born in Little Compton, a son of the late Antone and Mary (Monteiro) Chaves, he was a lifelong resident of Little Compton.

Mr. Chaves was the owner of Acme Sanitary Services for 30 years, retiring in 1996. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

He is survived by three sons, Jackson, George Jr. and Jay Chaves; two daughters, Jill Krull and Judith Nadeau; nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren; his long-time companion, Betty Briere; and one sister, Evelyn Chaves. He was predeceased by five brothers, Joseph, Antone, Albert, Lewis and James Chaves; and seven sisters, Mary Chaves, Gladys Medeiros, Georgianna Flores, Annie Bettencourt, Rosemarie Chaves, Rosalie Souza and Patricia Smith.

His funeral will be held Thursday, Aug. 20, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Catherine of Siena Church, on the Commons, Little Compton. Interment with military honors will be in Our Lady of Fatima Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted. Funeral arrangements were with Fern Acres Funeral Home, Little Compton.
