EAST PROVIDENCE — The Riverside Post 10 Junior Division American Legion Baseball team began play in the new Rhode Island 19/20 Elite League this week with a series of games, including 5-1 victory over Pawtucket in the season opener July 7 at Pierce Field.
Eli Barber threw four solid innings for the locals to pick up the win. The only run the visitors scored was unearned. Dylan Palombo closed out the victory with three shutout innings in relief.
The locals did all of their scoring over two innings in the middle of the contest.
Post 10 trailed 1-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth before the locals scored four times to take the lead for keeps. Colin McCarthy started the rally with a one-out double to right centerfield. Brandon Landry was then hit by a pitch. Mike Sabourin next singled sharply to right, plating McCarthy to briefly tie the score.
Ryan Heatherton followed with another run-scoring single, driving in Landry with what proved the game-winning tally. He and Grayson Sparr, who pinch ran for Sabourin, later scored as well when Pawtucket erred on a C.J. Hess liner. Post 10 tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth.
Post 10 was slated to close its first week of league action with road games against Wednesday evening, July 8, in Warwick at 6 p.m. and in Scituate Friday night, July 10, at Manning Field at 5:30 p.m.
