Townies fall to Scituate in Open State Tourney

JOHNSTON — The 2017-18 season for the East Providence High School girls’ basketball team ended with a narrow, 41-39 loss to Scituate in the opening round of the Open State Championship Tournament Wednesday night, Feb. 28, at neutral site Johnston High.

The fifth-seeded Spartans rallied from five points down with just under six minutes to play, finishing the contest on an 11-4 run to remain alive in the event. The victory also avenged a 48-36 Scituate loss to the 12th-seeded Townies earlier in February during the Division II regular season.

For East Providence, its winter comes to a close with a 16-8 overall record. The Townies also fell in the D-II playoff quarterfinals with a loss to Juanita Sanchez. The Spartans, runners-up to D-II champion Johnston, improved to 21-3 overall and advanced to the Open quarters opposite fourth-seeded Barrington Saturday, March 3, at Rhode Island College.
