Substance use disorder and depression have had an enormous impact on local families. These indiscriminate mental health issues have led to overdoses and suicides — they have taken celebrities, friends and our children. Tackling the opioid overdose epidemic and depression, and making sure that Rhode Island leads the way in addressing this crisis and those who are suffering, is a top priority of mine.

The most important way we can support people with mental health issues and substance use disorders is to make sure they know that they have our support, through the commitment of resources and programs. We must erase the stigma connected with these diseases and teach our children at an early age to understand and recognize symptoms so that early intervention is possible.

If elected, I will bring the same commitment to these issues as I did when successfully strengthening our drunk driving laws.
