Posted

Once again Fred graces us with the beauty of his students’ voices. Please join us on Sunday, January 19th at 2pm for this wonderful recital.

Since joining Temple Shalom in 1995, Cantor Fred Scheff has been a guiding musical presence, leading the congregation in song and introducing them to Jewish music spanning ancient to contemporary styles. With Cantorial experience dating back to 1970, Fred has served communities at Temple Habonim, Lawrence Jewish Community Center, and Temple Beth David. His academic background includes a Bachelor of Music from Rhode Island College, a Master of Music, and a Doctorate of Musical Arts from Kansas University.

Beyond his work as Cantor, Fred’s passion for music has led him to complete over 1,600 performances in concerts, operas, and oratorio across Rhode Island and nationally. He also teaches at the Music School of the Rhode Island Philharmonic and is an adjunct faculty member at Rhode Island College. A North Kingstown native, Fred now resides in North Providence with his wife Carrie and two of their four children.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
