Fracking proposed to revive dry Westport Annex well

WESTPORT — The Westport Town Hall Annex well ran dry last week prompting the suggestion that fracking be tried to bring it back to life.

Town Administrator Tim King told the Board of Selectmen on August 19 that the 816 Main Road Annex’s well had ceased producing water late the previous week, likely due to the dry summer weather of late.

Repairs were done that Friday but, by Monday morning, faucets again produced no water — the second pump had burned out, Mr. King said.

That pump was then pulled out “and from what I hear they are going to try to frack the well to try to increase its production,” he said.

In the meantime, the Town Hall Annex is operating without water.

Bottled water was brought in for drinking and a portable toilet was set up outside. Employees were also allowed time to head over to the nearby Town Hall to use bathrooms.

All meetings at the Annex will be relocated to Town Hall until water is again available.

Board member Steven Ouellette suggested that Mr. King check with a local company that provides water tankers — Mr. King said he’d give them a call.

And selectman Brian Valcourt said it will likely prove necessary to drill a new well.

Mr. King promised an update this week.
