Former BHS coaches selected for RIIL Hall of Fame

Ed Bradley and Bill McCagney will be inducted later this year

Two former Barrington High School coaches — Ed Bradley and Bill McCagney — will be inducted into the Rhode Island Interscholastic League High School Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2019.

The induction ceremony will be held on Oct. 30 at the Crowne Plaza in Warwick. Ticket information will be made available in the near future. 

Mr. Bradley served as the Barrington High School boys soccer coach for 13 years. He led the Eagles to three state championships, one state runner-up finish and seven league titles. He was then went on to coach the men's soccer team at the University of Rhode Island, leading the Rams to 10 Atlantic-10 titles and six NCAA tournament appearances. He has already been inducted into the RI Soccer Coaches Hall of Fame.

Mr. McCagney was a two-time All-State football and two-time All-League baseball player at Barrington High School in the early 1970s and was later selected as an All-Yankee Conference linebacker at the University of Rhode Island. Mr. McCagney returned to Barrington High School as a coach, leading the football, baseball and golf teams. During his time as Barrington’s head football coach from 1990 to 2014, he guided the Eagles to seven league championships, two co-league championships and five Super Bowl titles.

Mr. Bradley and Mr. McCagney are among the 14 individuals selected for induction into the RIIL Hall of Fame. Other members of the class are Mt. St. Charles hockey coach Bill Belisle, former NFL player Will Blackmon, former NHL goalie Brian Boucher, and former Providence College basketball standout Chelsea Marandola.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
