The East Providence High School boys' lacrosse team managed just one win all of last spring. In 2024, it took the Townies just one week to earn their initial Division IV victory as the Townies defeated Cranston East 14-4 on the road Thursday, April 4.

East Providence entered the contest against the Thunderbolts off a narrow 2-1 loss to visiting Classical in their home opener Monday, April 1. After a scoreless first half, Keigan Grant netted the loan goal for the locals with an assist from Nolan Travassos. Keeper Jacob Leite made 16 saves.

EP followed up with a fine effort against the 'Bolts, taking a quick 4-1 lead then building a commanding 10-1 advantage by intermission. Zach Kollett led the way with 4 goals and also had an assist. Grant had a hat trick. Brandon Bothelo had two goals and three assists. Nathan Capelo also had two goals and two helpers. Kendrick Costa likewise had two goals and assisted another. Sam Jackson and JT Estrela each chipped in a goal while Simon Palumbo and Noah Mensah each had a helper.

"It's good to get that first one under our belt so early in the season," said first-year EPHS head coach Zach Pangborn. "The kids know that they can do it now. My players haven't won many lacrosse games in their years playing here, so they're really putting in the hard work and holding each other accountable to make sure that last week's win is not our last."

Girls' lacrosse
The EPHS girls' lacrosse team its 2024 Division II slate underway last week, splitting a pair of games. The Townies defeated host Cranston West 8-5, but dropped an 11-6 decision in their home opener to visiting Mount St. Charles.

Kenna Wigginton lead the locals four goals in their win over the Falcons to the Mounties. Katherine Almeida had a pair while Sydney Olson and Dylan Flynn had one each. Goalie Williams made 13 saves. Wigginton and Kloey Iacovone and notched hat tricks (3 goals) in East Providence's loss to the Mounties. Williams was credited with 10 saves.

Baseball
The 2024 season started in earnest for the reigning Division II champion EPHS baseball squad as the Townies won both of their league outings, 1-0 over Burrillville and 9-3 over Chariho.

Against the Broncos, Tim Robitaille began his spring in brilliant form, striking out 18 while twirling a two-hit shutout. Freshman Aidan Martin in his first varsity game drove in the only run of the contest with a single in the bottom of the second inning. Robitaille and Oliver Andrews walked to start the frame. Gavin Palumbo reached on an error, erasing Robitaille. After Colin Roche made the second out, Martins clocked the first pitch he saw for a base hit to right field to place Andrews with the tally.

In their six-run win over the Chargers, Robitaille, Palumbo, Nolan Lorenz, Kyler Lorenz, Martins and Tyler Dicecco were the offensive catalysts while Dylan Annicelli earned the victory on the mound. The Townies scored twice in the top of the first and three times in second to build an early lead. The Chargers touched Annicelli for all three of their runs in the bottom of the third before EP cemented its edge with four more runs in the sixth. Annicelli and reliever Dicecco struck out 14 Chariho batters and scattered four hits

Softball
The EPHS softball managed managed to get just one of its games in as weather dampened the start of the Townies' 2024 Division I regular season schedule. The locals lost their lone encounter 7-6 in Smithfield.

The game went down to the wire, but the Townies couldn't bring the tying run around in the top of the seventh. Shelby Quinn had two hits and scored twice for EP. Mackenzie Pimentel drove in three for the Townies.

Boys' volleyball
The EPHS boys' volleyball team opened up its 2024 Division II regular season schedule with a pair of 3-0 sweep last week, including a 25-21, 25-23, 25-22 triumph on the road against Westerly. Jordan Rodriguez led the locals with 12 kills and 10 digs.

The Townies followed up by shutting out Woonsocket in their league home opener, 25-20, 25-15, 25-22. DJ Lepine and Rodriguez each has 12 kills. Logan Calouro added 12 digs and two service aces.

Boys' tennis
The EPHS boys' tennis team began its 2024 Division II schedule last week with a 5-2 win over Cranston West on the road.

The Townies split their four singles outings, John Vaughan winning his contest at third in three sets (4-6, 6-3, 6-2) and Jaydon Amaral his match at fourth in two (2-and-3). James McShane and Abigail Ellison, at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, each lost in straight sets.

East Providence swept the three doubles matches. The top tandem of Nathan Thurber-Jordan O'Hara won 1-and-5, at two Steel Martin and AJ Cassamas won 3-and-2 and at three Joe Kramer and Justin Petion won 0-and-2.
