EAST PROVIDENCE — The East Providence High School girls’ soccer team, not even at the half-way point of its Division II regular season schedule, has qualified for the postseason following a 3-1 victory over Mount St. Charles earlier this week.

Alyssa DeOliveira, Aaliyah Pattie and Olivia Williams scored for the locals while Mia Jackson made three saves as the Townies improved to 6-0-1 (19 points) in the league standings.

East Providence needed just seven games to reach the minimum 19 points to gain entry into the Division II postseason tournament. It’s one of the fastest qualifications for the Townies in recent memory.

The Interscholastic League initiated the points-based playoff system only a few years ago. Previously, the system was based either on win-percentage or a set number of teams.

The EPHS boys, meanwhile, suffered their first loss of the 2019 season Wednesday night, Sept 25, falling to host Shea, 1-0, in a Division I contest. The Raiders scored the game-winning goal in the 67th of 80 minutes.

The Townies saw their record fall to 2-1-3 and with nine points. The EPHS boys are approaching playoff qualification. Teams in boys’ Division I soccer much accrue 13 points from their 15 league games to earn a postseason bid.

The first-place EPHS girls play next in North Providence, September 26. The EPHS boys are back in action September 28 at South Kingstown.
