The East Providence High School indoor track and field teams, as they do annually, got the winter championship slate going over the recently while competing in their respective division meets at the Providence Career and Tech Academy Fieldhouse.

The EPHS boys were without jumping standout Kenaz Ochgwu for their Metropolitan Division meet Tuesday night, Jan. 30, due to a conflict with the boys' basketball schedule. The Townies managed 18 points to place sixth out of 11 teams, two spots lower than they finished during the regular season dual meet schedule.

Metro notes
Barrington, also the unbeaten duals champ at 10-0, was the far-and-away winner of the boys' Metro league meet, earning 188.5 points to the 121 of runner-up LaSalle. Classical was third with 76.

Senior Cameron Evora, who along with classmates Ochgwu and Dylan Slavick form the Townies' formidable jumping contingent, earned the best result for the locals at the division championships with his second-place result in the high. Evora clearned 6'2" to edge Barrington's Shea Parish on attempts for the runner-up spot. Central's Demetrius Outland won the competition at 6'5." Slavick earned a point with his eighth-place finish, clearing 5'8."

The rest of East Providence's points were earned as follows: William Anthony, William Massey, Gerald Gagnon and Luke Grimley running fifth (9:37.36) in the 4x8 relay; Nolan Travassos running eighth (9.19) in the 55 meter hurdles; Brian Rutkowski, Gagnon, Immanuel Prevete and Jaidin Ivy placing fifth (3:49.97) in the 4x4 relay.

As part of its overall victory, Barrington won the 4x8 relay in 8:20.69. Classical won the 4x4 in 3:33.10. Barrington's Ethan Knight won the 55 hurdles in 7.61.

More boys' notes
The EPHS boys ended their Metro Division duals schedule with a sweep of Central, 96-11, and Moses Brown, 68-40, in the league's final meet of the 2023-24 season held Monday night, Jan. 22, at the PCTA Fieldhouse.

EP swept the 3,000 meter race in its meet led by Jayden Caverio's overall 10th place run in 12:06.91. Will Anthony added a win in the 1,000 and was 10th overall with a time of 2:58.7.

In the speed events, the Townie team of Jietan Ruiz, Kwamahn Gillard, Jack Pawlik and Ivy were fifth on the night and first in their meet with a time of 1:39.99. Pawlik was the winner in the 55 meter dash with a time of 7.14, running 13th overall. Ivy was the winner in the 300 and 13th overall with a 39.59.
Ivy, Gagnon, Rutkowski and Prevete won the 4x4 relay in the meet and were fifth overall with a 3:51.04. Travassos led the locals with a seventh place run in the 55 meter hurdles in a time of 9.62.

In the field events, Evora was third and Slavick fifth both overall and in the EP meet in the high jump, clearing 6 feet and 5'8," respectively. Ivy was also second and 10th, respectively, in the long jump with a distance of 19'2.5." Michael Precious tossed second and eighth in the weight throw (43'1.25") and was second and 16th in the shotput (28'6.25").
