Townies claim four event wins, Bengals add two solo victories

PORTSMOUTH — The East Providence High School boys’ and girls’ outdoor track and field teams placed fourth and sixth, respectively, in their Eastern Division Championship Meets held concurrently at Portsmouth High School’s John F. Kennedy Field Sunday, May 15.

The EPHS boys recorded 57 points to place behind the winners from Barrington (196.66), the host Patriots (122.33) and Rogers/Newport (95).

The EPHS girls earned 39 points. Barrington also won the female team title with 159 points. Portsmouth, likewise, was second again with 126 and St. Raphael was third with 64. City-based Bay View was fourth with 61 and Rogers fifth with 54.

Solo champs
The EPHS girls’ 4x100 meter relay team of Nazarae Phillip, Kandace Daniel, Samantha Clarke and Giselle Raphael were among the locals to claim event victories.

In addition, Bay View’s Francine Miller won the girls’ 400 meters while teammate Suraily Sam won the girls’ shot put.

Nick Morrison, in the 400 meter dash, and Kenaz Ochgwu, in the triple jump, were the solo winners for the EPHS boys. Morrison was also part of the Townies’ victorious 4x4 relay quartet along with Denzy Suazo, Max Whiting and Kit Ruddock.

Morrison’s winning time in the 400 clocked in at 50.58 and the Townies’ 4x4 team won in 3:34.37.

Morrison, Whiting, Ruddock and Yusef Abdullah were also second in the 4x1 with a 44.34. Barrington won the race in 43.98.

Morrison was solo third in the 200 (23.4) while Ruddock was fourth (23.51) and added a fifth in the 100 (11.68).

In the 4x8 relay, Jayden Delgado, David Vieira, Kendrick Costa, and Peter Caron were fifth in 10:29.45.

In the field, Ochgwu won the triple with a distance of 39 feet, 1 inch. He added a fourth in the high jump, clearing 5’6.”

Also in the field, Kameron Threatt added a sixth in the shot put with a toss of 37’2.5.”

More EPHS girls’ notes
The Townies’ 4x1 team clocked a winning time of 52.03 seconds.

EPHS finished second in the 4x4 relay as  Katherene Diaz-Araujo, Clarke, Raphael and Gladys Barrera ran a 4:26.06. Portsmouth won the event in 4:16.25.

In the 4x8, Katherene Diaz-Araujo, Michelle Diaz-Araujo, Barrera and Kathryn Patalano were third in 11:19.37. Barrington won in 10:03.26 and Portsmouth was second in 10:07.

Phillip (27.25) and Daniel (27.77) ran second and third to Barrington’s Sarah Yee (27.06) in the 200.

And Raphael was also sixth in the 100 dash in 12.68 won by Mt. Hope’s Gabriella Marsili in 13.17.

Bay View notes
Miller paced the Bengals on the track with her winning time of 1:01.7.

She also added two solo seconds, running 2:31.56 in the 800 and 11:15.44 in the 3,000 meters. Kyle Keough of Barrington won the former in 2:31.47 and Portsmouth’s Allie Kaull the latter in 11:15.04.

Amy Papa added a runner-up run for Bay View in the 100 meter hurdles (17.83). Barrington’s Grace Saal won in 17.54.

Also on the track, Sophia DiChiaro was fifth in the, 1,500 (5:26.96) and Simone Miranda was sixth in the 300 (54.91).

In the field, Sam’s winning throw in the shot covered 35 feet, 1/4 inch. She was also second (85’10”) to Barrington’s Eva Garofano (104’8”) in the discus.

Papa’s day also included a sixth in the long jump (15’1/4”) and a fourth in the triple jump (31’).

The EPHS sides next travel to Coventry High School for their Class A Championship Meets Saturday, May 21, while Bay View heads to Exeter-West Greenwich for its Class B Meet the same day.
