EAST PROVIDENCE — Oscar Elmasian has retired as chief of the East Providence Fire Department. Mr. Elmasian did so following a meeting with Mayor Bob DaSilva on Monday, Sept. 16.
Mr. Elmasian spent six years in the position, following his appointment to the post by City Manager at the time Peter Graczykowski in September of 2013. Mr. Elmasian spent nearly a year in the role on an interim basis following the retirement of then-chief Joseph Klucznik in December of 2012.
Mr. Elmasian began his career as an EPFD firefighter in March 1987. He was promoted to the rank of lieutenant in 2003, then became fire marshal in 2008. He served in that position as well as acting chief until his formal appointment atop of the EPFD hierarchy in 2013.
Mr. Elmasian’s last day on the job was Monday. Battalion Commander Glenn Quick has been named chief on an interim basis.
Mr. DaSilva publicly acknowledged Mr. Elmasian's departure at the Tuesday, Oct. 17, City Council meeting where Acting Chief Quick made his initial appearance before the body addressing a department appropriation for the purchase of a new rescue vehicle among other items.
