Eileen Catherine Matthews, age 73, of Clear Lake City, Texas

Eileen Catherine Matthews, age 73, passed away on July 22, 2020, from the COVID-19 virus in Clear Lake City, Texas. She was born on Jan. 30, 1947, in Providence, Rhode Island. Eileen was the daughter of the late Edward and Grace Myers of Barrington, R.I., and is survived by her beloved husband, Wayne Matthews, of Houston, Texas; her brother, Bernard Myers, and his wife Sandy Pagano Myers of Bristol R.I.; nephew Christopher Myers of Bristol and niece Donna Myers Lebovitz of Oak Park Ill., and other family members.

She graduated from Barrington High in 1965 and had degrees from Rhode Island College and the University of Colorado – Boulder. As a Special Ed teacher, she worked with special needs children throughout her career in Rhode Island, Colorado, California and Texas.

She also worked with stroke victims and their families.  She was a teacher with the Clear Creek Independent School district of Houston for thirty-plus years. Eileen had a passion for her students and their families. She also supported a number of charities endorsing children with special needs and their families.

Eileen loved spending time with her friends. She was a member of the Clear Creek Association of Retired Teachers and the ADK Sorority. Traveling was one of her greatest pleasures, and there were many trips that were shared with family and friends. She was always ready and willing to go shopping, to lunch with friends, or just relax at Starbucks enjoying her favorite “Java Chip Frappuccino.”

A “Celebration of Life” memorial will be held on April 24, 2021, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at Crowder Funeral Home, located at 111 East Medical Center Boulevard in Webster, Texas (281-280-9000). = In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a memorial donation please do so to a children’s educational charity or scholarship of your choice. A suggestion: a favorite of Eileen’s was/is Alpha Delta Kappa Foundation, or their Web Site, P.O. A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
