East Providence High School seniors set pen to paper to continue athletic careers

EAST PROVIDENCE — East Providence High School, under the auspices of district athletic director Alex Butler, held what has become its annual senior athletes signing day last Tuesday afternoon, June 4, on the Elmasian Auditorium stage where a group of Class of 2024 graduates announced their intention to continue their playing careers at the collegiate level.

Steven Clark Jr., Nolan Lorenz, Kate Bernhardt, Daniella Escudero, Kenna Wigginton, Rylee Jackson, Kaylee Vieira and James McShane each officially put pen to paper, pledging their skills to a group of Division II and III programs.

Clark, the team's top ground gainer and a contributor on defense while serving as a captain for the Townies on the gridiron last fall, is headed to Plymouth State University in Plymouth, NH, where he'll continue to play football.

Lorenz, the starting shortstop on the 2023 EPHS Division II baseball champs as well as this spring when the Townies reached the final four in the league playoffs, is headed to Dean College in Franklin, Mass., to play baseball.

Teammates Bernhardt and Escudero, two integral members of the Townies' D-II girls' volleyball championship club last fall, take their talents to the women's programs nearby at Salve Regina University and Rhode Island College, respectively.

Three grads from the EPHS girls' lacrosse program, winners of the D-III title in '22 and runners-up in '23, plan to keep playing the sport at the next level. Wigginton is headed to Tiffin University in Tiffin, Ohio, to continue her career for the Dragons, who vie in the NCAA Division II Great Midwest Conference. Jackson will also attended Dean and Vieira RIC.

And RIC is where McShane heads this fall, too. The No. 1 player on the EPHS boys' ladder the last two seasons and a key member of the Townies' D-III title squad in 2022, he intends to play on the Anchormen men's tennis team.
