PROVIDENCE — Kit Ruddock’s victory in the boys’ 300 meter race highlighted the East Providence High School athletes who competed in their respective class indoor track and field championship meets Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Providence Career and Tech Academy Fieldhouse.

Ruddock, either individually or in relays, paced the Townies to a fifth place result out of 13 teams in the Class A Championship meet. EPHS scored 35 points. Bishop Hendricken won the title with 168 followed by LaSalle with 141. Cumberland was well off the pace in third with 67. North Kingstown finished just ahead of the Townies in fourth with 48.

Nazarae Phillip’s second-place run in the 55 meter dash helped the EPHS girls’ squad earn 21 points to place ninth in the 12 team Large Class Championship meet. Classical was first with 139 points, Barrington second with 83 and Cranston West third with 75.

More boys’ notes
Ruddock, David Vieira, Lucas Santa Cruz and Kwamahn Gilliard clocked a time of 1:40.46, giving the Townies their first points of the meet with a sixth place finish in the 4x200 relay. LaSalle won the event in 1:32.05.

Ruddock earned his initial solo points, running fifth in the 55 dash with a 6.7. LaSalle’s Jared Gibbons defended his title in the event, matched the time he ran last year while running a 6.55 for the win.

Ruddock took home all 10 points and the gold medal on the day with his victory in the 300 in a time of 37.16. Toll Gate’s Domenic Calise was the runner-up in 37.59.

Ruddock also fared well in the field, finishing fifth in the long jump with a distance of 19 feet, 10.5 inches. Brady Fisher led a LaSalle sweep of the top three places with his winning leap of 21’3.75.”

“Kit has been consistent all year. He is a great kid who does everything I ask. He is the type of kid that is easy to pull for,” said EPHS head coach Bob Lyons.

The Townies excelled as a group in the high jump, placing three in the scoring placed led by the third-place height of 6 feet cleared by Dylan Slavick. Kenaz Ochgwu and Cameron Evora shared sixth place, each clearing 5’10” in the same amount of attempts.

Athletes from East Providence and other schools will participate in the a “last chance” qualifier event this weekend, February 11, back at the PCTA Fieldhouse where they’ll get one final opportunity to earn a spot into the 2023 state indoor meet also at the PCTA Fieldhouse on February 18.

Ruddock, a senior, has earned his way into the 55 and 300 events. He’s also in the mix for the long jump as are he and his mates in the 4x2 relay.

Of Ruddock’s prospects at states in just over a week’s time, Lyons added, “He has a good chance of winning the 300. His chances improve if he can earn a preferred lane by running a slightly better time at the last chance qualifying meet. He’s also in the running to win the 55. He’s only .04 seconds from qualifying for nationals so I’m hoping he can run 6.64 or faster these last two meets in order to qualify.”

More girls’ notes
Phillip, who has bettered the competition in the dash during most regular season and invitational meets so far this winter, came up just shy of winning the class title as she clocked a 7.49 to the the 7.33 of Cranston West’s Ailani Sutherland, the defending champion.

Phillip, Kandace Daniel, Samantha Clarke and Giselle Raphael got EPHS on the board with a fourth place run (1:50.91) earlier in the meet in the 4x2 relay. Classical won the race in a new meet record of 1:47.02, which bettered the mark of 1:47.45 run by a LaSalle quartet back in 2015.

Phillip scored points in another individual event, running fifth in the 300 dash with a 43.74. Christian Cormier of LaSalle won the event in 42 flat.
