East Providence's Davis Pinto wins boys’ division long jump title

Continues Townies' success in event at Metro meet

PROVIDENCE — Jahad Davis Pinto led a short-handed East Providence High School squad at the 2020 boys’ indoor track and field Metropolitan Division championship meet Monday night, Jan. 27, at the Providence Career and Tech Academy Fieldhouse, scoring all the points for the Townies on the evening.
The freshman followed in the footsteps of recent EPHS grad Anuoluwapo Ogunronbi in retaining the long jump title for the Townies. Davis Pinto accounted for 10 points as he covered 20 feet, 6.25 inches to win the Metro meet as Ogunronbi had done the two prior seasons. That distance was just ahead of Mount Pleasant senior Frederick Mallay, who finished second last week with a distance of 20’5.5.” Barrington junior Will Sanchez was third at 20’1.”
Mallay got the better of the competition, including the E.P. frosh, to win the 55 meter dash. Mallay clipped his teammate Abraham Tambah at the line to win the Metro crown in 6.63 seconds. Davis Pinto collected his other point by placing sixth in 6.87 seconds. Earlier in qualifying, the results of which matched the final, Davis Pinto clocked a season-best time of 6.8 seconds. Mallay again edged his mate Tambah by running a 6.67.
Davis Pinto nearly scored in a third event, the high jump, but lost out based on the number of attempts. Wheeler School’s Daniel Shimberg won the Metro title by clearing 5’8.” Mahari Nayte of Juanita Sanchez was second at 5’6,” bettering LaSalle’s Brady Fisher, again on attempts. Davis Pinto was one of four jumpers to clear 5’4,” though the three others did so on fewer tries to take places four through six. The top six finishers in events score points — 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, 1 — from first to sixth place.
Overall, LaSalle used its dominance in the distance running events as well as high finishes in a number of others to claim the Metro team championship with 126 points. Classical and Barrington shared second with 76 apiece. The Townies had 11 points to finish eighth out of 10 teams. Shimberg’s high jump win accounted for all 10 Wheeler points, which placed the team ninth. Hope did not score.
Of Davis Pinto’s performance and the meet overall, EPHS head coach Bob Lyons said, “It’s very impressive for a freshman to make an impact in multiple events. Jahad would have placed top three easily in high jump if the event did not conflict with 55 meter dash and (the height) was raised before he made it back. If he stays focused, concentrates on school and other responsibilities, he can be special. Right now he is technically raw and should only get better once he dedicates himself fully. Needless to say I look forward to working with him…We had couple of kids that were seeded high, but they were ill and unable to perform.”
The Metro competition was the start of the indoor track championship schedule for the Townies, who next return to the PCTA Fieldhouse for both the Class A meet on Saturday, Feb. 8, at 9 a.m. and the state finals on Saturday, Feb. 15, at 11 a.m.
