Two teams representing East Providence High School will play for volleyball championships Saturday, Nov. 11, and will each do so on the Rhode Island College campus in Providence.
The top-seeded and undefeated EPHS girls' spikers will seek to claim the Division II title Saturday at 1:30 p.m. when the Townies square off with third-seeded Cumberland in RIC's Walsh Gymnasium.
EPHS escaped the upset bid of fourth-seeded Barrington in its semifinal match earlier in the week, going the five-set distance to earn a 3-2 victory to earn its 17th league win of the fall without a loss.
Cumberland had a bit easier time of it in their final four contest against second-seeded Mt. Hope, needing four games to win 3-1.
East Proviedence defeated the Clippers 26-24, 25-19, 24-26, 25-12 in their only regular season outing on October 16 in Cumberland.
The last East Providence team to go unbeaten also capped off its fall with a state championship. The 2005 edition of the Townies under legendary coach Luis Carvalho, for whom the volleyball court at EPHS is named, went 21-0 en route to the Division I title.
That's the last championship of any kind for the program as well, and also ended a run of five consecutive state titles won by the Townies in the early aughts.
Earlier Saturday, at 10:45 a.m. in the RIC Recreation Center, the EPHS Unified Volleyball squad faces Coventry for the Division III championship.
The Townies' Unified Club, an effort bringing students with special needs together with their peers from the general population, defeated Coventry in their semifinal outing on November 8. EPHS faces the winner of the Lincoln High-Ponaganset semifinal tilt at RIC Saturday.
A victory would give the Townies their first ever championship in the eight-season history of the program.
