NARRAGANSETT — As part of the annual Special Olympics Rhode Island Torch Run Plunge at Salty Brine State Beach in Narragansett March 19 and 20 a "Super Plunge" is also scheduled.

The Super Plunge is an effort to increase both awareness and fundraising for the Torch Run Plunge.  The Super Plunge is exactly like the Torch Run Plunge, with only one small difference.

Instead of plunging into the near-freezing water a single time,  a nine-member team of "Super Plungers" representing local law enforcement agencies must plunge once per hour for a 24 hour period or some 216 plunges.

Started in 2013 by Richmond Police Chief Elwood Johnson, this year's Super Plungers include East Providence Police Sergeant Diego Mello, Foster PD Chief William Ziehl, Correctional Officers' Anne LaRocco and Matt Laythe along with Chief Johnson, Cranston PD Detective Eric Leclerc, Woonsocket Firefighter Rick LeBreche and SORI volunteers Jim Cummings and Bob Mathews.

To learn about the plunge or to donate visit the SORI website.

As part of their preparation for the event, the "Super Plungers" have been practicing in recent weeks as shown in the photos below by Chris Babiana...
