East Providence closes all access to parks throughout the city
Mayor's order restricts use through at least April 17
EAST PROVIDENCE — As the weather improves and the temptation increases to gather in larger numbers increases along with it, Mayor Bob DaSilva issued an order Friday evening, March 27, closing off access to all recreational areas in East Providence through the middle of April to combat the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
Reports began to filter out earlier in the day especially of significant amounts of young people, currently being taught online through the distance learning program implemented by the state for schools at least through next week, utilizing basketball courts and skateboard platforms at parks around the city. Friday’s mid-60 degree weather likely accelerated their desire to leave their homes.
The city, like the state, previously instituted a limit of 10 people or less in any one location. That mandate included public parks, fields and playgrounds.
The mayor’s latest order precludes the use “of any amenities available at said areas, including but not limited to, basketball courts, skate parks, and tennis courts" through April 17, pending a further extension with the consent of the City Council.
