Four girls from the East Bay will compete in international tournament

Posted

A group of 16-year-old soccer standouts from across the East Bay are about to embark on the trip of a lifetime.

Grace Muccino, Kylie Lavin, Victoria Silva and Kyra Boucher will be representing their premier soccer club, Rhode Island Rush, in an international tournament in Paris. Their first U17 game is scheduled to be played July 9.

Opposing teams on the schedule include Bizkerre FT, SoCal (USA), Quimper Kefeunteun FCF (FR), and Intercups (MX).

The local team going to Paris is actually Washington Rush. That affiliate reached out because they needed additional players from a Rush club to fill their roster (apparently some of their own players couldn’t attend). When they reached out to other Rush coaches, these girls were recommended by their coach as good quality players to add to their roster.

This East Bay contingent will bring plenty of savvy to this overseas tournament.

Grace and Kylie are also members of the Barrington High School girls’ soccer team, while Victoria and Kyra play for the Mt. Hope High School Huskies. Together, they’ve formed a special bond and friendship which has carried them a long way through their formative years.

Grace, the daughter of Tom and Claudia Muccino of Barrington, is a junior at Barrington High School, has excelled at the Barrington Youth Soccer level, as well as the R.I. Rush Club.

Kylie, daughter of Michelle and Joe Lavin of Barrington, also starred in Barrington Youth Soccer and is in her third season as a member of the Barrington High School Eagles.

Victoria is the daughter of Paul and Laura Silva of Bristol and will be entering her third season as a member of the Mt. Hope High girls’ soccer team. She, too, has been a member of the R.I. Rush squad for four years, and was a member of the Rhode Island state U16 team a year ago, as were her East Bay teammates. She was also Soccer Rhode Island 2017 Girls Premier Player of the Year, and a former standout in the Bristol Youth Soccer League program.

Warren resident Kyra Boucher is also entering her third year as a member of the Mt. Hope girls’ soccer team. She came up through Warren Youth Soccer and has played exceptionally well throughout her young career. She is the daughter of Sheri and Paul Boucher of Warren.

These four athletes have been exemplary performers for Rush Soccer, the largest youth soccer club in the world with 39 clubs in the United States and nearly 40,000 players nationwide.

According to Paul Silva, a former soccer coach himself, these four young ladies are very special soccer talents who meshed quickly.

“Victoria was already friendly with Kyra prior to joining this team because they went to school together,” he said. “As for the other two, the closeness is different. Victoria, Grace, and Kylie came onto this team at its inception in Rhode Island. They first met at this club's first soccer camp that was held at the Johnston Youth Soccer Field. The coaches and director of the club offered them positions on the team after seeing their skills during the camp.”

Mr. Silva continued, “The more they practiced and played, the more they grew to be friendly with each other.  Grace and Victoria became much closer during their trip to Italy, when they played in the San Marino Cup during the summer of 2017. They have been like best friends ever since. Kylie has always been a good team player and friend to all of her teammates.

“Grace is one of the most competitive players on the team, but almost always will blame herself for anything that goes wrong,” said Mr. Silva. “As a father, my daughter joining this team has opened up opportunities for her that she would not have had otherwise. She has met some wonderful girls that will be her friends for years to come, on and off the field. She has traveled to compete with them up and down the East Coast, as well as to Italy and now to France.

“These four particular girls have grown closer than most of the other girls on the team,” he said. “They speak regularly, even though they come from different places. They socialize together on and off social media. And, they do that on top of being a cohesive part of the soccer team that they play for. Something that they strive to improve on with every practice (and in between) and it shows in the way their teammates react to their efforts and join in to make their team one that can play at almost any level being a threat to win.”
