Dunphy free throws give Eagles late lead

They were down, but not out.

Trailing North Kingstown by as many as 18 points in the second half, the Barrington High School girls basketball team rallied and knocked off the top-ranked Skippers, 47-46, on Wednesday night, Jan. 18.

The Eagles’ victory snapped the Skippers’ 26-game Division I regular season winning streak.

Barrington trailed by double-digits in the first half, and fell behind 31-13 in the first minute of the third quarter. But the Eagles refused to quit, and managed to cut the Skippers’ lead to 11 points by the start of the fourth quarter.

Barrington used a full-court pressing defense to claw its way back into the game. And with 58 seconds remaining, the Eagles’ Maddie Gill hit a basket and gave her team a 1-point lead.

North Kingstown’s Jillian Rogers responded with a basket with 38 seconds to play, giving the Skippers a 46-45 lead.

With the game on the line, Barrington’s Isys Dunphy drove to the basket and was fouled. Dunphy went to the free throw line and knocked down both shots, putting the Eagles back on top for good, 47-46.

Gill led all Eagles’ scorers with 16 points, while Lindsey Lemay finished with a double-double — 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Rogers led the Skippers with 21 points.

Barrington’s record improved to 7-3, while North Kingstown slipped to 8-1.
