Barrington tennis falls to Wheeler; state tourney is next weekend

The Barrington High School girls tennis team lost to Wheeler in the Division I semifinals on Saturday, Nov. 14, but a number of the team members will compete in the state singles and doubles tournaments next weekend.

Barrington Coach Betsy Brenner said she was proud of her team's effort against Wheeler.

"They are a very strong team and earned the win," Coach Brenner said. "Unfortunately we were missing one of our singles players due to quarantine and it impacted all three of our usual doubles teams with girls having to move up a position.

"The girls tried their best, but health and safety come first and it was not meant to be."

Coach Brenner said that much like last year, Barrington remains the best public school team in the state.

"It has been very stressful coaching during a pandemic, but I am glad the girls were able to play this season," Coach Brenner added.

Barrington High School's Caroline Maher and Kate Robertson will compete in the state singles tournament next weekend, while the pairings of Hailey Walter and Katie Byon, and Meghan McDermott and Mira Cheng will compete in the state doubles tournament. The matches will be played at Slater Park.
