The Barrington High School boys’ ice hockey season came to an unexpected end on Monday afternoon.

Barrington, which was scheduled to face off against Burrillville in a playoff game on Tuesday night, Feb. 23, was forced to forfeit the game. 

BHS officials were told Monday that all but six members of the hockey team would have to quarantine because they were considered close contacts with a member of the East Greenwich hockey team who had tested positive for Covid-19 recently. The Eagles skated to a 2-2 tie against East Greenwich on Saturday night.

Meanwhile, the East Greenwich hockey team will still be allowed to play in its postseason game on Tuesday night. It was reported that nine members of the Avengers team had tested positive within the last 90 days. According to reports, the Rhode Island Department of Health has cleared those nine players for Tuesday night's playoff game.

Barrington High School Director of Athletics George Finn said he learned about the situation on Monday afternoon and contacted BHS hockey coach Kevin Croke immediately. The team was already at an ice rink preparing for practice.

"I told him you're going to have to get those kids back on the bus and get them home," Mr. Finn said. 

Members of the BHS hockey team will now need to observe a quarantine period. 

"For me, having to address those 24 young men... that was one of the toughest things I've had to do," he said. 

Mr. Finn said the atmosphere at school was somber, following the news of Barrington's forced forfeiture.
