Barrington outscores Cranston East, 27-6

The Barrington High School football team opened its regular season with a 27-6 victory over Cranston East on Friday afternoon, Sept. 13.

Barrington's defense scored the first touchdown for the Eagles — linebacker Luke Gorham intercepted a screen pass and returned the pick 25 yards for a touchdown. The extra-point kick failed, but Barrington led 6-0.

Barrington's next three touchdowns came on passes from quarterback Brigham Dunphy to wide receiver Cole Reed. The scoring strike went for 17 yards, while the second was for 20 yards. The final touchdown connection went for 35 yards.

Dunphy also found Reed for a two-point conversion, and Will Sanchez booted one extra point.

Barrington head coach Sandy Gorham said his defense played well for all four quarters, avoiding a let-down like the one they had against Middletown in the Injury Fund game. Jack O'Connell, Luke Gorham, Thomas Rocha, Josh Nutter and Sanchez all played well on defense.

"Getting a quick start and sustaining energy throughout the game were the keys," said Coach Gorham.

Barrington will face its second test of the regular season this Friday, Sept. 20, when the Eagles host Portsmouth. The game will kick off at 4:45 p.m. in Barrington.
