Eagles crush Huskies in Medeiros Cup game

Mt. Hope takes early led, but Barrington responds en force

The Barrington High School boys hockey team celebrated an 8-1 victory over Mt. Hope in the annual JP Medeiros Memorial Cup game at Portsmouth Abbey rink on Wednesday, Jan. 8.

The Huskies actually opened the scoring, netting a goal at the 2:34 mark in the first period. Jake Marshall found the back of the net for the Huskies, assisted by Joshua Martin.

But it was all Barrington after that.

At 4:22 in the first Barrington's Justin Ames scored off assists from Robert Ide and Cole Vieira to knot the score at 1-1. At 12:52, the Eagles' Ethan Lundsten scored and gave Barrington a 2-1 lead at the first intermission.

The Eagles scored three more goals in the second period — each goal came on power plays. Matthew Bates scored at the 6:32 mark, assisted by Samuel Faulkner and Jackson Gorman. Brenen Gazeryan made it 4-1 Barrington with a goal at the 7:20 mark. Callum Flaherty assisted on Gazeryan's goal.

And at 8:06, Robert Ide assisted on a goal from Owen Crain. The Eagles entered the second intermission leading 5-1.

Barrington's offense was just getting warmed up, as it netted four more goals in the final period. Bates opened the scoring in the third period, off assists from Gorman and Charlie Ames. Gazeryan scored his second goal of the game at 3:54 in the third period — Faulkner assisted on the short-handed score.

Benjamin Frieman scored an unassisted goal to make it 7-1 Barrington at the 4:37 mark, and Andrew Harris finished off the scoring for the Eagles, while John Lombardi tallied the assist.

All proceeds from the Medeiros Memorial Cup games benefit the JP Medeiros, Jr. Scholarship Fund; the games are the only fund-raiser for the JP Medeiros, Jr. Memorial Scholarship for Eagles and Huskies hockey players — both boys and girls.

In the past 17 years, 74 student-athletes have received awards from the scholarship fund.

A graduate of Mt. Hope High School, JP Medeiros Jr. played, coached and loved hockey. He had been a member of the Huskies hockey team and was a team captain his senior year. JP was killed in a car accident in 2002.
