Colin McDermott drilled a long-range three-pointer with 51 seconds remaining and helped the Barrington High School boys basketball team defeat Hendricken 57-55 in front of a standing-room-only crowd on Friday night, Jan. 31.
The Eagles held leads of 10-3 after the first quarter and 27-17 at halftime. James Calderella and Jakob Reyes each scored eight points in the third quarter to bring the Hawks to within five, 41-36, after three quarters.
Calderella's put-back gave Hendricken its first lead of the game at 53-51 with 3:15 remaining. Barrington’s Owen Pfeffer made two free throws to tie the game at 53-53 with 2:12 remaining.
McDermott then made one of two free throws to give the home team a 54-53 lead with 1:36 left. Reyes’s layup at the 1:05 mark provided the Hawks with a 55-54 advantage, which set the stage for McDermott's 25-footer to give the Eagles the lead for good.
McDermott led the Eagles with four three-pointers and 17 points. Ryan Rigamonti added 13 and Caleb Satisfield finished with 12 points. Calderella and Reyes each scored 20 points for Hendricken.
Barrington High School Coach Michael Raffa thanked the hometown fans for cheering on the Eagles throughout the game.
“The standing room only raucous crowd helped get us to the finish line tonight,” Raffa wrote in a message. “To see so many teachers, administrators, friends, alums, and fellow coaches at the game made tonight really special. Our student body was unbelievable. They showed up early and they were loud. Everyone played a part and contributed to tonight's win.”
Raffa praised all of his players for their effort. He said Alex Anderson played his best game of the year, Pfeffer was stellar handling the Hawks’ pressure defense, and Gabe Tostes and Ryan Realejo provided solid minutes off the bench.
“I’m really proud of our players,” Raffa wrote. “They fought through the Hendricken runs and the emotions that come with it and stayed together. We continue to talk about making the next play, to be positive, and confident.”
The Eagles improved to 13-4 overall and 11-4 in league play.
