EAST PROVIDENCE — A positive test for COVID-19 by a member of the East Providence High School boys' soccer team's coaching staff has sent nearly all members of the program into quarantine and raising doubts the Townies can finish their 2020 season.
Superintendent Kathryn Crowley reported Sunday morning, Nov. 8, a confirmation of the positive result. In total, she said 31 players and coaches have now entered into the Rhode Island Department of Health's quarantine protocols.
The potential of a coronavirus outbreak inside the program added more strain on what was already a condensced season due to the pandemic.
Boys' soccer teams were scheduled to play on six regular season games. The Townies had played four, but none for two weeks mostly due to weather. E.P. had a 1-2-1 record in league games.
While waiting for the pending result, East Providence's contest Saturday, Nov. 7, against Tolman was postponed. Now with the confirmation and because of the quarantine guidelines, the fate of that game and the Townies' regular season finale set for Thursday, Nov. 12, against Cumberland are to be determined.
