EAST PROVIDENCE — Hasbro’s Music Matters Network and the Rhode Island Philharmonic Music School will host its sixth annual benefit concert on Saturday, Jan. 30, from 8 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

All proceeds will benefit the Rhode Island Philharmonic Music School Scholarship Fund, a program designed to give disadvantaged youth access to music. The event takes place at The Met Hope Artiste Village, 1005 Main St., Pawtucket, and is open to all ages. It will offer guests a variety of musical genres to enjoy, including swing, jazz, pop, classic rock and tunes from the eighties.

The Rhode Island Philharmonic Youth Jazz Band, which is composed of students from high schools around the state of Rhode Island, will begin the night with a swing/jazz performance, followed by three of Hasbro’s employee-led bands: “The Exclusives”, “Toys 2 Men”, and “Blaster.” A DJ will perform during the last hour of the event. Doors open at 7 p.m.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
