Choral Society to perform Bach’s Christmas Oratorio

The Greater New Bedford Choral Society, under the leadership of Music Director Jonathan F. Babbitt, will present Johann Sebastian Bach’s Christmas Oratorio at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 7, at the First Unitarian Church on Eighth Street in New Bedford. The program will be accompanied by the Choral Society Festival Orchestra, and will consist of parts IV, V and VI of the the Oratorio, which commemorate the liturgical feasts of New Year’s Day, the First Sunday after New Year’s Day, and the Epiphany. Featured soloists for the performance will be Alexandra Whitfield, soprano, Allison Messier, alto, Gregory Zavracky, tenor and David Tinervia, bass.  The performance will be Maestro Babbitt’s debut with the Choral Society; the Adamsville, Rhode Island resident was appointed to the post over the summer of 2016.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
