For the second time in a week, checks were stolen from the outdoor mailbox at the US Post Office in Barrington, said police.
On Saturday, Dec. 14, a Lincoln Avenue resident told police that a check written out for health insurance and mailed at the outdoor mailbox at the US Post Office on Middle Highway in Barrington had been stolen, forged and then cashed.
On Dec. 7, a Townsend Street resident told Barrington police that someone stole four checks that he had mailed at the same mailbox in Barrington. The resident said two of the checks had been forged; one was cashed for $9,850 on Nov. 27. Someone tried to cash another check written out for $6,440 on Dec. 5.
Police spoke with postal officials, who said someone has been using a device to fish mail out of the mailbox in an effort to steal checks, alter them and cash them illegally.
The post office official said they are in the process of changing their mailboxes.
