Camp American Canine welcomes four-legged campers

Westport’s Manypaws Pet Villa is no more, replaced at its 1126 Main Road location by Camp American Canine.

As the name suggests, the “camp” theme is central to this business, said owner Jeffrey Smock who took over Pet Villa which had operated from that location for over two decades.

“We offer Doggie Day Camp, Sleep-over Camp (boarding), Camp Clip & Dip (grooming),” and the eight employees who care for the dogs and activities are called “counselors.”

Mr. Smock said he left the corporate world to pursue his lifelong love of animals, especially dogs. In high school he worked at a pet store, he’s been a wildlife rescuer and has volunteered at shelters and animal rescues.

“I’ve had just about every kind of pet you can think of, but again, with dogs I’ve always had that special connection.”

Since opening recently, the day camp approach has been an immediate hit, Mr. Smock said. Dogs can stay for a half or full day of personalized care and get exercise and companionship while owners are at work or busy with other things. New customers can give it a try with a complimentary day.

To handle the seven day a week demand, they are working to expand their large yard to provide additional space for campers to stretch their legs.

In addition to the other services, Camp American Canine offers dog training and dog supplies.
