Bristol says no to music for the half-marathon

Posted

The Bristol Town Council unanimously denied a request for amplified music and announcements for the fifth annual Independence Rhode Race. Applicant Susan Rancourt of Warren had put in the request to modify the already-approved half-marathon event, scheduled for Saturday, June 29, at Independence Park.

Ms. Rancourt was seeking approval to have amplified announcements and music for the event, beginning with a race announcer at 6:30 a.m., as well as music starting at 8 a.m., as runners finish the race.

Though they felt positively about the event itself, councilors felt that the addition of loud music and voices was too disruptive and inconsiderate for the surrounding neighbors.

“I think we have to be respectful to the people who live in these communities,” said Councilor Mary Parella.
