Bristol opens cooling centers in response to extreme heat

Posted

In response to excessive heat warnings from the National Weather Service, the Town of Bristol will be operating two official "cooling centers" this weekend.  Local temperatures are forecasted to be between  95 and 100 degrees, with humidity increasing the heat index to feel like temperatures of 105 to 110 degrees.

In preparation, the Town of Bristol has opened the Quinta-Gamelin Community Center and Rogers Free Library as Cooling Centers for members of the public. The Quinta-Gamelin Community Center, located near the entrance to Colt State Park, will be staffed by members of the Bristol Fire Department and be open extended hours beginning Friday, July 19, through Sunday, July 21.

The hours of operation are:

  • Rogers Free Library: 525 Hope St.: Friday to Saturday: 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Quinta-Gamelin Recreation Center: 101 Asylum Road: Friday to Sunday: 8 a.m.-8 p.m.

Individuals requiring transportation to a Cooling Center should call the Bristol Police Department at 401/253-6900. Service Animals are allowed to accompany owners to the Cooling Centers.

Individuals with pets can make arrangements with the Bristol Police Department.

Individuals are advised to keep A/C units running and stay hydrated with water throughout the weekend.
