Bristol OKs resolution for lights on Mt. Hope Bridge towers

BRISTOL — The Bristol Town Council voted unanimously on Wednesday, Aug. 7, to ask the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority (RITBA) to install superstructure lights on the Mt. Hope Bridge for its upcoming 90th anniversary.
The resolution was requested by Portsmouth resident John Vitkevich, who is determined to have RITBA return lights to the bridge’s two towers.
Ever since a passing barge accidentally tore them off back in the 1970s, the lights have never been replaced by RITBA. With the bridge turning 90 on Oct. 24, however, Mr. Vitkevich is looking to celebrate the anniversary by having the lights installed once again.
“I think it’s a fitting adornment to the Mt. Hope Bridge to put the LED lights back on,” he said.
By obtaining the support from both the Bristol and Portsmouth communities, Mr. Vitkevich reasoned, he felt hopeful that RITBA would oblige.
Bristol council members had no problem in doing so, voting unanimously to send a letter to RITBA in favor of the resolution.
Mr. Vitkevich will next appear before the Portsmouth council on Tuesday, Aug. 13. The meeting begins at 7 p.m.
