Books salutes Acoaxet Club on its hundredth birthday

Posted

1919 was a busy year in Westport.

As well as the town’s American Legion being formed and the James Morris Post #145 post created by 15 World War I veterans, the Acoaxet Club in Westport Harbor was also established by ten men from Fall River who “established and maintained places for social meetings, exercises, yachting, healthful recreation ... in general promoting the civic improvement of that part of the Town of Westport, commonly known as Westport Harbor or Acoaxet.” So noted the club’s by-laws at the time.

On August 3, 2019 a celebration was held for members under the direction of club president Thomas Slaight. Over 400 gathered for the event that included fireworks on the club grounds on Howland Road. The club has also published The Journey to 100 - An Historical Visit, a 100-year history of the club. The book, written by award winning historical author and former Club president, John B. “Red” Cummings, Jr., is available to members at the club and is also available at area book and gift stores for $19.19.
