A quahogger spotted what appeared to be a body floating in the water off Nayatt Point early Friday morning, March 23.

Officials from Barrington, Warren, Warwick and the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management launched boats and responded to the area at about 7 a.m.

Barrington Police Chief John LaCross confirmed that the body of white male was located in the water. Officials pulled the body onto the Warren Fire Department boat; Warren transported the body to the boat launch at Colt State Park.

Chief LaCross said DEM is handling the investigation. He said he did not yet know the identity of the individual.

DEM Spokesperson Gail Mastrati released a short statement at about 11:30 a.m.: "The body has been recovered and the Medical Examiner is on the way to Colt State Park. DEM Environmental Police are leading the investigation with assistance from the Narragansett Bay Marine Task Force."
