No records were set, but there nevertheless some mighty big pumpkins came to town when Frerichs Farm held its annual giant pumpkin weigh-off Saturday at the farm.
The annual contest, sponsored by the Southern New England Giant Pumpkin Growers, attracted what might have been record crowds, farm owner David Frerichs said. Those who showed up were treated to some true giants including the winner, an 1,889.5-pounder grown by perennial contender Ron Wallace of South County.
Apart from Mr. Wallace’s winning entry, there were plenty of other big ones, including a 1,806-pounder grown by Steve Sperry and a 1,531.5 pounder grown by Bob Singleton of Portsmouth.
Contestants this year traveled as far as New Hampshire to weigh their pumpkins.
