BHS Unified Basketball team celebrates big win

Eagles shock Huskies in overtime

It looked like the game was over.

It appeared that the clock had run out on the Barrington High School Unified Basketball team during a recent game against Mt. Hope.

BHS Coach Jacob Kapstein said he had tried to call a timeout with about 10 seconds left to play and the Eagles trailing by two points. He said officials later realized the situation and put 10 seconds back on the clock.

With a second chance, Barrington persevered. Kelton Satine hit a basket that tied the game as time expired. The shot forced an overtime period, and in the extra session Barrington shined. The Eagles went on to win the game 62-58.

“The kids were through the roof,” Kapstein said of his team’s emotions following the win. “It was a total reversal of emotions. The kids were high-fiving and hugging.”

Barrington opened the season with a couple of tough losses — one to Portsmouth and one to Rogers — but Kapstein said the Unified season is about so much more than the team’s record.

“There’s no such thing as a bad day” in Unified sports, Kapstein said. “It is truly the best sporting event in all sports… It’s just pure happiness.

“The best part is just seeing how excited these kids get. There’s nothing but positivity, just seeing the joy in their faces in creating special moments. It means the world to me..”

The Unified Basketball team is scheduled to play a home game on Wednesday, April 3, at 4:30 p.m. The Eagles will host the Middletown Islanders.
