Eagles compete in state qualifying tournament

Posted

The Barrington High School girls' tennis team improved to 11-1 after defeating South Kingstown, 7-0, and Bay View, 6-1, last week.

On Friday, Barrington players also competed in the State Qualifying Tournament. Barrington's top three singles players — freshman Caroline Maher, senior Hope Robertson, and sophomore Beth Wang — all won their matches convincingly and advanced to the State Tournament which will be held at Slater Park, Oct. 20-22.

Barrington's top two doubles teams — seniors Abigail and Jillian Walter and sophomores Alexis Brenner and Lauren Jay — each won two matches and also advanced to the state tournament.

Barrington will be well-represented with more girls advancing out of qualifying this year than ever before in Coach Betsy Brenner's nine years of leading the Eagles.

"I am excited for the girls and am really looking forward to states this year," said Coach Brenner. "Our fourth singles player, Andreea Dan and third doubles team of Hope Vetromile and Rayna Mishra each easily won their first round matches in qualifying before being eliminated by strong players in the second round."

Football

The Barrington High School football team fell to 1-3 after losing to Central High School, 14-9, on Friday night.

Barrington's Matteo Martinez booted a 32-yard field goal to open the scoring for the Eagles, and Dante Augustine hauled in a 12-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Liam McManus in the second half. Central tailback Arlester Joyner ran for about 250 yards, including an 80-yard touchdown run in the second half.

Barrington will play at Tolman on Friday night at 7.

Boys' soccer

Barrington tied one game and won another last week — the Eagles tied Portsmouth 2-2 on Tuesday, Oct. 3, and defeated Shea 3-0 on Thursday, Oct. 5.

A rematch of last year's Division I state championship game ended in a 2-2 tie. Barrington's Alex Senich scored both goals for the Eagles while Aiden Doyle had an assist. Emmanuel Despines made 10 saves.

Timothy Nolan scored two goals and notched an assist, leading Barrington over Shea. Doyle scored the Eagles' other goal and Nick Rockwell and Eric Fitzgerald also had assists. Despines finished with four saves.

Girls' volleyball

Barrington defeated Exeter/West Greenwich 3-0 (25-11, 25-11, 25-9) on Tuesday, Oct. 3, and improved to 8-3 in Division I. Victoria Mello had six kills and Julia Fortin finished with two kills and two aces.
