Girls ice hockey

The East Bay Co-op girls ice hockey team, led by Kat Barker’s four goals, skated past the Smithfield-Coventry-Moses Brown Co-op team 6-5 in its season-opener on Saturday, Jan. 23.

Barker opened the scoring with a goal (Peyton Whittet and Marissa Levreault assists) in the first period and made it 2-0 on a power-play goal (Whittet assist) at the start of the second period. Whittet expanded the Eagles’ lead to 3-0 with a goal (Barker assist) at the 10:09 mark of the second period. Whittet netted her second goal (Barker assist) at 7:03 in the second.

Smithfield scored its first goal at 6:46 in the second, but Barker scored her third goal (unassisted) about 30 seconds later.

The Eagles’ commanding 5-1 lead was short-lived, however, as the Smithfield Co-op team scored two more goals to close out the second period.

Barker scored again at the start of the third period and the Eagles held on for a 6-5 win. Sara Turillo stopped 20 shots in net for East Bay.
