Cranston West wins, Barrington finishes third

The Barrington High School gymnastics team competed in a four-team meet at Prestige Fitness and Gymnastics Center in Swansea on Saturday, Jan. 25.

Cranston West finished in first place, scoring 131.35 points, while Portsmouth was second at 127.8. Barrington finished third, scoring 122.45 points and West Warwick was fourth at 117.2.

Barrington's Sabrina Goncalves, Hannah Melker, Ally Jameison and Lily DaPonte scored in the all-around. DaPonte scored a 31.65, including an 8.5 on beam and an 8.25 on vault. Jameison finished with a 31.6, including an 8.0 on beam and 8.25 on vault. Melker had a 29.35 in all around; she scored a 7.95 on vault. Goncalves finished with a 27.15 in the all around, including an 8.0 on vault. Callie Frazier scored an 8.4 on vault.

Boys basketball

The Eagles blasted Prout 79-41 on Wednesday, Jan. 22. Barrington took an early lead and held a 32-18 advantage at halftime. Will Rywolt scored 19 points to lead Barrington, while Ryan Bonneau and Ben Batting each knocked down three 3-pointers; Bonneau finished with 13 points and Batting dropped in 11. Connor Sullivan and Matt Peecher each scored eight points, while Brendan Conaty and Ben Proulx added six points each.

Barrington improved to 8-1 after defeating East Greenwich 62-52 on Friday, Jan. 24. 

Solid second-half defense by Ben Batting and a strong offensive performance by Rywolt powered the Eagles to victory over the Avengers, who entered the game with just one loss. 

Rywolt scored 24 points in the win, while Bonneau added 12 and Conaty finished with 11. Sullivan scored nine for the Eagles, who were scheduled to play at West Warwick on Tuesday, Jan. 28, and at home against Tolman on Thursday.

Girls basketball

Barrington won its second straight game, defeating Smithfield 41-33 on Tuesday, Jan. 21. 

Nina Gibbons led Barrington scorers with 13 points, while Hailey Walter had 11 and Cary Heterick finished with 10 points. The Eagles held a 23-11 lead at halftime.

On Thursday, Jan. 23, Barrington traveled to North Kingstown and lost to the Skippers 54-44. And on Monday night, Barrington lost at South Kingstown, 55-34. 

Against the undefeated Skippers, Heterick scored 19 points, including 5-for-6 shooting from the free throw line. Gibbons finished with 11 points and Walter scored 8. 

Barrington played the undefeated Rebels very close throughout the first half of the game, entering the break trailing 28-24. But South Kingstown proved too strong and pulled away in the second half. 

Chloe Rouleau scored 13 points to lead the Eagles, while Heterick finished with six and Gibbons had five.

Boys indoor track

The Eagles wrapped up their regular season with a split, defeating Classical 55.66-53.33 sand losing to LaSalle, 66.33-42.66. The meet was held in Providence on Jan. 21.

Barrington's Will Cauley scored key points for the Eagles. Will won the shot put and the weight throw. Walter Joachim-DelPoio won the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.96 seconds. 

The split moved Barrington's record to 8-1 in the Metropolitan Division, which was good enough for second place behind LaSalle. 

At the Metropolitan Division Championships on Monday, Jan. 27, Barrington finished tied for second place with Classical. The Eagles and the Purple teams each scored 76 points, while LaSalle finished first with 126 points.

• 4x800 relay: 3. Barrington (Jackson Montour, Charlie Stockwell, Adam Copple, Ethan Major)

• 3,000-meter race: 3. Holden Vaughan

• 4x200 relay: 4. Barrington (Jackson O'Connor, Aaron Brady, Andrew Blazewicz, Will Sanchez)

• High jump: 4. (tie) Thomas McAdams, Blaze, Sanchez

• 4x400 relay: 5. Barrington (Blazewicz, Sanchez, Joachim-DelPoio, Montour)
