EAST PROVIDENCE — All Stater, player of the year, team captain, Hall of Famer, championship level coach and, now, athletic director.
One of the most consequential student-athletes in the recent history of St. Mary Academy-Bay View can add the latter title to her resume as Fallon Scorpio has been chosen as the new director of athletics for the Bengals.
Scorpio, a Cranston native and former standout softball player at the school who returned to Bay View in 2020 to become head coach of the program, was tabbed to succeed Jennifer Wasson, who is stepping aside after eight years in the AD position.
Scorpio is expected to continue as the Bengals softball coach for the foreseeable future. Wasson is departing Bay View for LaSalle Academy where she'll become Dean for the Class of 2027. Deans at LaSalle fill a similar, albeit an expanded, role as to that of an AD. The also serve as the disciplinarian for the class they oversee and can be a counselor of some capacity in addition to coordinating the extracurricular events for the group.
"We are thrilled to welcome Fallon Scorpio back to St. Mary Academy-Bay View as our new Athletic Director. Her impressive educational background, leadership skills, and passion for sports make her an ideal fit for our community. We have complete confidence in her ability to enhance our athletic program and inspire our student-athletes to reach new heights," said Bay View principal Dr. Marcela Rossi.
Scorpio brings "a wealth of experience and an unwavering commitment to empowering young athletes" to the position. Scorpio graduated from Bay View in 2010.
During her time on the Bengals softball squad, they finished first in their division all four years, won the state title in 2007 and were the runners-up in 2008.
While a Bengal, Scorpio, who also participated in track and field hockey, was twice selected for first team All-Division and All-State, as well as National Fast-Pitch Coaches Association’s first team All-East Region and second team All-American. In addition, she was named Gatorade Rhode Island Softball Player of the Year in 2009.
She began her collegiate softball career at the University of Rhode Island, spending two successful seasons with the Rams in Kingston. Scorpio eventually finished playing as a Friar at Providence College where she earned a Bachelor's Degree in Health Policy and Management in 2014. She also obtained a Master's Degree in Sports Leadership from Northeastern University in 2015.
More recently, Scorpio guided the Bengals to a pair of runner-up results in pursuit of league titles. Bay View lost to Scituate in the Division II tournament finals to conclude the 2021 season. This past spring, the Bengals, after being realigned back among the state's elite, fell to LaSalle in the Division I championship round. In between, she led the Bengals to a 16-2 regular season in 2022 during their first year back in D-I.
In addition to her duties at Bay View, Scorpio owns the East Coast Softball Academy and H.I.T. Center of Rhode Island. She serves as the President of the East Coast Scorpions, a non-profit softball organization dedicated to "empowering young athletes."
Scorpio's appointment as athletic director follows a rigorous selection process conducted by a diligent search committee, which recognized her exceptional qualifications, dedication, and potential to lead the athletic program to new levels of success.
"Coming back to Bay View as Athletic Director is a true honor and privilege," said Scorpio, a 2023 Bay View Athletic Hall of Fame inductee. "Being able to give back to young women at Bay View and aid not only in their growth and development as athletes, but as people, is an opportunity I am extremely excited for."
