For Barrington High School senior Maile Somera, being named the Words Unlimited George Donnelly Award as the Co-Schoolgirl Athlete of the Year culminated a season and career filled with personal bests.
Maile, a three-time Gatorade R.I. Girls Volleyball Player of the Year, led the Eagles to the I-A title and a runner-up finish to North Kingstown in the Division I Championship last fall.
A tremendous all-around talent, Maile has taken her sport by storm ever since she was a freshman. The 5-foot-9 outside hitter, who also led Barrington to the 2015 Division II title and the 2016 Division I crown, recorded 474 kills, 233 digs, 57 service aces, and 19 blocks, while posting a kill percentage of .551 and a hitting percentage of .428. She finished her brilliant career with 1,387 kills and 832 digs.
This coming fall, she will be headed to Yale University.
Maile shared this year’s Words Unlimited Schoolgirl Athlete of the Year Award with Gianna Rao of Ponaganset High School during ceremonies this past Sunday night at the 73rd annual Words Unlimited awards banquet at the Cranston Country Club.
