Barrington’s Adam Kelly and his sister Annika won their respective divisions at the Estonian Winter Hammer Throw Cup Championship at Parnu Niidupargi stadium in Estonia in early February.

In the men’s division, Adam finished in first place with a top distance of 66.49 meters. Toomas Tankler was second place with a 62 meters, and Neemo Kull was third at 54.76.

Annika Kelly won the women’s competition with a distance of 53.30 meters. Gertu Kuttmann was second at 51.10.

The continued success for Adam and Annika has not surprised Barrington High School throwing coach Bob Gourley.

“Adam and Annika are both very conscientious and hardworking athletes who always strive to accomplish all undertakings to the very best of their abilities,” Mr. Gourley said.

“Adam had an outstanding throwing career at Princeton University. While at Princeton he broke the school record in the 35-pound weight throw with a throw of 76’8 ½”, and threw the 16-pound hammer 235’11” to rank second all-time.

“Annika got off to a great start at Princeton her freshman year throwing a 5th all-time Princeton best of 59’8 ½” with the 20-pound weight. Unfortunately, she did not get the opportunity to throw the 4 kilo Hammer due to the COVID-19 virus. Interesting that her high school personal best, and Rhode Island high school state record of 190’8” would stand 4th on the Princeton All-Time List, and just over six feet from the 2nd best in school history.”

Mr. Gourley added: “Now, with limited participation and competition they are both gaining invaluable experience on the international scene in Europe, and have bright futures when things return to normal.”
