Police: Teen riding motorized bicycle strikes van head-on

Posted

Rescue personnel rushed a Barrington teenager to the hospital on Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 18, after he was involved in an accident on Lincoln Avenue.

Barrington Police Chief Dino DeCrescenzo said the 18-year-old Barrington resident was riding a motorized bicycle east down Lincoln Avenue nearing the intersection with Upland Way a little after 3 p.m., when he crossed the center line and smashed head-first into a van traveling the opposite direction.

Police said the teenager suffered serious injuries during the crash and was rushed to the hospital. His medical condition was not known, although it was reported that the teenager had undergone surgery on Wednesday.

Chief DeCrescenzo said the teenager was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

According to police, the driver of the van will not face charges. Chief DeCrecsenzo said the 56-year-old Riverside resident who was driving the van tried to stop the vehicle as the teenager veered across the center lines and into the west-bound lane of travel.

"There were skid marks," said Chief DeCrescenzo. "He tried to stop."

Police said the victim graduated from Barrington High School last year and had been stopping by BHS regularly this fall to visit friends who were still students at the school.

Residents reported that a section of Lincoln Avenue just west of Upland Way was closed to all traffic following the crash.
