Barrington resident Sophia Melisaratos drew some attention from Barrington Police after she was spotted walking down the center of County Road between the two lanes of traffic on Friday morning, Oct. 6. 

Melisaratos was wearing a polka dotted dress carrying signs, toting a boombox behind her while talking into her phone to make a social media post. Barrington Police Patrolman Cameron Rodrigues told her to stay off the road and not play music too loudly, according to the police report. 

Melisaratos said that she was protesting Barrington Public Schools for discriminating against her son who has hearing issues. 

“His teacher keeps moving him to the back of the class. He can’t hear from there,” she said, clearly frustrated with the situation. She stated that school is also with holding assistive technology that her son could use in class and at home. Ms. Melisaratos has been fighting with the school system for her son’s rights and about issues with the IEP for almost two years. “My son will not go back to school until the school system responds,” she said.
