New Year's Day marked the beginning of the 2019-20 session of the Rhode Island General Assembly, and it also marked Liana Cassar's first day as a representative.
Ms. Cassar was one of the 14 new members — and 75 total members — of the RI House of Representatives who took the oath of office on Tuesday, Jan. 1. RI Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea administered the oath to all the new legislators.
The RI House of Representatives began the year with a program of activities, including the re-election of Rep. Nicholas Mattiello as Speaker of the House. Rep. Mattiello fills the District 15 seat (Cranston). This will be Rep. Mattiello's second full two-year term.
Rep. Cassar fills the District 66 seat (Barrington and East Providence). She works as a strategy and operations consultant for the Global Health Media Project. According to a press release, Rep. Cassar graduated from John Jay High School in Katonah, NY, and holds a master's degree in public health from Boston University, an MBA from Simmons College and bachelor's degrees in communications and Spanish from the University of Connecticut.
Rep. Cassar, a Barrington resident, defeated fellow Democrat John Chung in a primary this past September, and then defeated Republican Rhonda Holmes in November's general election.
