Barrington police search for robbery suspect

Posted
Barrington police recently released images of the man suspected of robbing the Verizon Wireless Zone store in the Barrington Shopping Center. The incident occurred on Nov. 27 — an employee at the store called police at about 7:55 p.m., and told the dispatcher that a man had just robbed the business of more than a dozen cell phones. Officers responded and spoke to the two employees — a female worker said she had been inside the store when a man entered wearing a baseball cap and a bandana over his nose and mouth, and said "This is a stick-up." The employee described the man as being African American, standing 6-foot-1 and wearing a sweatshirt. Police said the suspect motioned like he was carrying a weapon under his sweatshirt — she did not actually see a gun — and then brought the woman to a bathroom in the back of the store. At about that time, a male employee who had been in the back of the business walked into the showroom. The suspect then brought the male employee to the bathroom. Police said the two employees stayed in the bathroom until they heard the door chimes sound. The employees told police the masked man stole 15 cell phones, each costing about $700. They said he left the store and walked toward the Shaw's Supermarket parking lot. Police investigators are trying to obtain footage from the store's security cameras. Anyone with more information is asked to call the police department's confidential tip line at 437-3933.
