Police: Man tried to steal package from Chachapacassett Road home

Barrington Police have obtained a warrant to arrest a Providence man after he allegedly tried to steal a package from a Barrington resident’s front steps.

The incident occurred on Monday, Nov. 18 on Chachapacassett Road. According to police, the resident was home waiting for his new cell phone to arrive when he noticed a man walking away from the house carrying a package.

The resident went outside and confronted the individual, who tried to flee the property. The resident grabbed the man’s jacket and jarred loose the package. The suspect then got into a vehicle and fled the scene, police said, but not before the resident snapped a photo of the vehicle and its license plate.

The Barrington resident contacted the police, who ran the license plate. It was traced back to Massachusetts resident. Police spoke to that person — she confirmed that her boyfriend had been using the vehicle. Police later used the information to obtain an arrest warrant for the 35-year-old Providence man. As of Monday, Nov. 25, Barrington Police had not yet arrested the man.

Packages dumped

In an unrelated incident, a Humphreys Road resident called police at about 6:10 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 22, after spotting a motorist throw a bunch of opened cardboard boxes into another resident’s front yard and then speed away. Police said all the packages had been addressed to residents at an apartment complex on Bay Spring Avenue. Police are investigating.
