Barrington police are investigating an alleged sexual assault that involved two minors and occurred in a wooded area abutting the East Bay Bike Path.

Initially, the alleged victim and her mother brought the case to East Providence police, thinking that the incident took place in that town. But East Providence police checked the location and realized it was in Barrington — a short walk from the bike path's intersection with Metropolitan Park Drive.

Barrington police investigators spoke with the girl — she is 11 — and her mother and gathered details about the alleged assault. Police said "improper touching" occurred between the young girl and another juvenile. They said both individuals are East Providence residents.

Officers scoured the location in the woods last week and collected evidence from the scene of the alleged crime; police have reportedly identified the suspect and were hoping to obtain an arrest warrant this week.

Police said the alleged act would fit the crime of first degree sexual assault.
